Over Burrow Roman Fort

Over Burrow Roman Fort is the modern name given to a former Roman fort at Over Burrow, Lancashire in North West England [1]. The fort was likely built on the slight prominence northwest of the River Lune's confluence with Leck Beck, to command a crossing over the river [1]. The site is on the route of the Roman road up the Lune Valley from Lancaster, but not at the junction with the older road north from Ribchester which passes about 1.2 kilometres to the east [1]. Evidence suggests that a timber fort was established here late in the first century but little is known about it [1]. Archaeological excavation of the clay-and-turf ramparts and defensive ditches also suggests a second period of occupation at a so far undetermined time [1].
