Bremetennacum

Bremetennacum Veteranorum was a Roman auxiliary fort at modern Ribchester in Lancashire, guarding a crossing of the River Ribble. First built in timber around AD 72-73 by Legio XX Valeria Victrix, it was rebuilt in stone in the early 2nd century and remained occupied until the 4th century. The fort covered about 6 acres and was garrisoned for much of its life by Sarmatian cavalry, stationed in Britain by Marcus Aurelius in AD 175. Its most famous find is the Ribchester Helmet, an elaborate bronze cavalry parade mask discovered in 1796 as part of a hoard. The site is a Scheduled Monument.
