High Street, Lake District

A Roman road crossing the summit of High Street fell at 828 metres, the highest Roman road in England, connecting the forts at Brougham (Brocavum) and Ambleside (Galava). Likely built in the late 1st or early 2nd century AD, Roman surveyors chose the fell tops over densely forested and marshy valleys below. Much of the road is unusually sunken in a hollow rather than built on a raised agger, leading to speculation that the Romans adapted a prehistoric trackway. The road is a scheduled monument.
