Kirkby Thore

Kirkby Thore is the site of the Roman fort Bravoniacum in Cumbria, England. Originally a Flavian turf-and-timber fort (c. AD 69-96), it was destroyed around AD 125 and rebuilt in stone. The late 4th-century garrison was the Numerus Defensorum under the Duke of the Britains. Thirteen inscribed stones including altars to Fortuna, Jupiter, and Belatucader have been found. Excavations during A66 road works uncovered a Roman vicus settlement with timber buildings, Samian pottery from Gaul, and amphorae spanning the 1st to 4th centuries AD.
