Brocavum

Roman auxiliary fort at Brougham near Penrith, Cumbria, covering over 3.4 acres at the junction of three major Roman roads. Probably founded during the governorship of Agricola (AD 78-84), it was occupied continuously into the late 4th century. The garrison included Cohors III Bracaraugustanorum, recruited from Lusitania. Altars dedicated to the war god Belatucadrus were recovered on site. The medieval Brougham Castle was later built over part of the fort, reusing Roman masonry including a tombstone visible in the keep.
