Ambleside Roman Fort

A Roman fort tentatively identified as Galava, located on the northern shore of Lake Windermere at Waterhead in the Lake District, England. An initial timber fort was built c. AD 79-90, replaced by a stone fort under Hadrian in the AD 120s that garrisoned roughly 500 soldiers. It guarded the Roman road from Brougham to Ravenglass and served as a supply hub, evidenced by its unusually large granaries. A unique tombstone records soldiers killed by enemies inside the fort, the only such inscription known from anywhere in the Roman Empire. Occupation continued into the late 4th century.
