Petriana

Petriana (also called Uxelodunum, modern Stanwix) was the largest fort on Hadrian's Wall, measuring 177 x 213 metres (over 9 acres) on a natural platform above the River Eden in Carlisle, England. It housed the Ala Petriana, the only milliary (1,000-strong) cavalry regiment in all of Britain, making its prefect the senior officer on the entire Wall. Originally built in turf and timber, it was later rebuilt in stone and expanded for cavalry operations. In 2017, a well-preserved bath-house with hypocaust and an inscription to Julia Domna, wife of Emperor Septimius Severus, was discovered nearby.
