Main Limes

The Main Limes (Nasser Limes) was established around 90 AD as part of the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes, forming the Roman frontier along approximately 50 km of the River Main between Grosskrotzenburg and Burgstadt. The river served as a natural boundary, eliminating the need for the palisades and ditches used elsewhere on the limes. Security relied on individual watchtowers and nine or ten forts at locations including Stockstadt, Obernburg, Trennfurt, and Miltenberg. The broader Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.
