Teufelsstein, Haardt

The Teufelsstein is a sandstone monolith approximately 2.5 metres tall and 4 metres wide, situated atop a 317 m hill near Bad Durkheim in the Palatinate Forest. Five steps are carved into the rock leading to a hollow interpreted as a sacrifice bowl, with a channel or "blood groove" running down the side. The stone bears Celtic Iron Age cup marks and grooves, as well as later medieval crosses and geometric signs, indicating the site remained spiritually significant across many centuries. The monolith rises above the remnants of an ancient Celtic ring wall, suggesting it served as a sacred ceremonial center.
