Heidenmauer, Palatinate

The Heidenmauer ("heathen wall") is a Celtic circular rampart near Bad Dürkheim in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. At 2.5 km in length, it is one of the largest surviving Celtic fortifications in Europe[1]. Built around 500 BC as a Murus Gallicus—an earth-and-timber rampart faced with stone—the massive earthwork was deliberately destroyed not long after its construction[1]. Only the stone facings remain, as the wooden internal structure has long since rotted away[1].
