Stapeley Hill

Stapeley Hill in southwest Shropshire is home to Mitchell's Fold, a Bronze Age stone circle constructed over 3,000 years ago from dolerite stones quarried from the hill itself. Originally containing around 30 stones, 15 survive today forming a rough circle. The hill also hosts a ring cairn and the Cow Stone menhir. The nearby Cwm Mawr site was a Bronze Age axe factory producing distinctive axe-hammers traded throughout central Wales and England. In 1980, some researchers suggested the monuments may have served astronomical or calendrical functions.
