Wapley Hill

Wapley Hill is a large multivallate Iron Age hillfort in Herefordshire, 3 km southeast of Presteigne, occupying approximately 5.5 hectares on a west-facing escarpment. The roughly triangular fort features massive southern defences with five ramparts and ditches, and a complex inturned entrance passage. A late Bronze Age ritual shaft sunk to 33 m depth suggests the site may have served as a Celtic religious centre rather than purely defensive. Four unexcavated pillow mounds within the enclosure further support its possible sacred function. The site is a Scheduled Monument.
