Hoarstones

The Hoarstones is a Neolithic to Bronze Age stone circle in Chirbury with Brompton, Shropshire, measuring 23.3 by 21.1 metres in an elliptical shape. It contains 38 to 40 small dolerite stones, probably sourced locally, with a central stone of unclear original purpose. Two small round cairns lie approximately 30 metres from the circle centre. It is one of two surviving prehistoric stone circles in Shropshire alongside Mitchell's Fold, from a group of five once recorded within two miles of each other. The Reverend C. H. Hartshorne first documented the site in 1841, and around 1897 a perforated sandstone axe-head was ploughed up nearby and donated to the Ashmolean Museum.
