Bury Ditches

Bury Ditches is an Iron Age hillfort between Clun and Bishop's Castle in the Shropshire Hills, dating from around 500 BC. Situated on the crown of Sunnyhill, it forms a neat oval enclosing 3.3 hectares with maximum dimensions of 374 by 260 metres. The northern side, where the slope offers less natural protection, has up to four or five successive banks with intervening ditches. The entrance is a classic in-turned design where the ramparts turn back to form a 40-metre-long internal passage. Interior features include evidence of roundhouses, raised granaries on four- and six-post structures, roads, pits, and hearths. It is widely regarded as one of the best-preserved hillforts in England.
