Clayhanger, Devon

Near the hamlet of Clayhanger in Devon lies the site of a Roman fort at Cudmore Farm, overlooking a tributary of the River Batherm. Considered the best-surviving Roman fort in southwest England, it is rectangular, approximately 100 metres across each side, with an 8-metre rampart and four outer ditches. Cropmarks inside the site reveal building locations, and Roman tile and samian ware have been recovered. Scheduled as a monument on 7 March 1994, the fort mostly lies in the parish of Bampton.
