Cadbury Castle, Devon

Iron Age hillfort near Bickleigh in Devon, situated roughly 250 metres above sea level overlooking the Exe Valley. Excavations revealed at least two phases of prehistoric settlement and a 3rd-century Roman ritual shaft within the earthworks. During the English Civil War in 1644, Parliamentary forces under Sir Thomas Fairfax occupied the hillfort as a staging ground for the siege of nearby Bickleigh Castle, adding an external earthwork defence that remains visible today.
