Tiverton, Devon

Tiverton is a town at the confluence of the rivers Exe and Lowman in Devon, England, with human occupation dating to the Stone Age, evidenced by numerous flint tools found in the area. Cranmore Castle, an Iron Age hillfort atop Exeter Hill, is one of the largest enclosures in Devon at over 15 acres, with clear sightlines to other earthworks and overlooking the river confluence. Its function remains debated -- possibly a livestock enclosure, market site, or tribal oppidum. A Roman marching camp was discovered on the hillside below Knightshayes Court near Bolham. The town's name derives from "Twy-ford-ton," meaning "the town on two fords".
