Cullompton

Cullompton is a town in Mid Devon, England, with its earliest evidence of occupation from the Roman period. Two Roman forts were discovered on St Andrew's Hill in 1984 through aerial photography, with finds indicating construction around AD 50-70. The earlier, smaller fort was replaced by a larger one whose ramparts survive as field boundaries. The fort controlled a crossing of the River Culm and guarded the Roman road between Exeter and Somerset. Cullompton appears in Alfred the Great's will (c. 880 AD) as Columtune, left to his youngest son Aethelweard.
