Taplow is best known for the Taplow Barrow, a 7th-century Anglo-Saxon burial mound standing 4.5 m high and 24 m in diameter. Excavated in 1883, it contained the lavishly furnished grave of a chieftain or prince, dated to around 620 AD. Grave goods included a sword, spears, shields, a gold buckle, drinking horns, glass beakers, an Egyptian bronze bowl, and harp fragments, now held in the British Museum. It was the richest Anglo-Saxon burial known until the discovery of Sutton Hoo in the 1930s. The village name derives from Old English meaning "Taeppa's barrow".
