Whelpley Hill

Whelpley Hill Camp is a univallate defended enclosure on a plateau in the parish of Ashley Green, Buckinghamshire. The roughly oval site measures 120m by 100m, covering 1.8 hectares, with a rampart 16m across and a ditch 12m wide. Originally classified as an Iron Age hillfort (700 BC onward), recent geophysical surveys have led to its reinterpretation as a possible Bronze Age ringwork settlement. Despite heavy ploughing since 1860 leaving virtually nothing visible on the surface, the site is believed to retain significant buried archaeological evidence for understanding defended sites across the Chiltern Hills.
