Cholesbury

Cholesbury Camp is a large, well-preserved Iron Age hillfort in the Chiltern Hills of Buckinghamshire, roughly oval in shape and measuring approximately 310 m by 230 m. It is a rare multivallate hillfort with multiple concentric earthwork defences, including an inner bank averaging 8 m wide and ditches 6-12 m wide. Excavations by Day Kimball in 1932 found evidence of iron smelting in hearths with bloomery slag, along with Belgic pottery from the late Iron Age (c. 200 BC - 50 AD), suggesting intermittent occupation during periods of strife. The hillfort is a Scheduled Monument, though it is currently on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register due to vegetation damage.
