Aylesbury

County town of Buckinghamshire, built atop a univallate Iron Age hillfort dating to the first half of the 4th century BC. Excavations at The Prebendal in 1985 revealed a ritual area containing burials of four children and a young woman accompanied by animals, plus a human skull placed in the hillfort ditch as possible boundary commemoration. The hillfort did not continue into the later Iron Age. In the Middle Saxon period, a palisade trench was cut into the old ditch to form the boundary of an early minster church, showing the site's enduring significance.
