Whiteleaf Cross

Whiteleaf Cross is a chalk hill figure on Whiteleaf Hill near Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire. The figure comprises a Latin cross 24m across with 6m-wide arms atop a triangular base 103m wide, reaching 70m in total height. Its origin remains unknown; first recorded by Francis Wise in 1742, theories range from medieval to post-medieval construction. The cross was covered during WWII to prevent use as a navigation landmark by enemy bombers. A Neolithic barrow adjacent to the cross has been dated to 3660-3520 BC. The site is a Scheduled Monument within the Whiteleaf Hill Nature Reserve.
