Ffridd Faldwyn, Montgomery

A complex multivallate Iron Age hillfort in northern Powys, Wales, approximately 503 x 254 metres overall, sited on a prominent hill west of Montgomery overlooking the River Severn. One of the largest hillforts in Wales, it shows Neolithic occupation preceding four Iron Age phases. The earliest phase was a 1.2-hectare palisaded enclosure, later enlarged to 4.4 hectares with timber-laced ramparts extending down the slope toward the river. Excavated by B.H. St John O'Neil from 1937 to 1939, following techniques developed by Mortimer Wheeler at Maiden Castle.
