Pfünz Roman Fort (Castra Vetoniana) was a Roman cohort camp built c. 90 AD on a 42-metre-high Jurassic hillspur in Bavaria, strategically positioned between the Altmühl valley and Pfünzer Bach stream [1]. The site features remarkably preserved double V-shaped ditches hewn directly into rock, with the western rampart ditch being the best preserved example [1]. It forms a component of the Rhaetian Limes, which achieved UNESCO World Heritage status in 2005 [1]. Test excavations in 1998 by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Protection uncovered rich and rare finds, demonstrating the site's continued archaeological significance [1].
