Epfach

Epfach, known in antiquity as Abodiacum, was a Roman road station in Upper Bavaria at the strategic intersection of the Via Claudia Augusta and the salt road from Salzburg [1] [2] [3]. A military camp was established on the Lorenzberg hill shortly after 15 BC to secure the Lech river crossing [1] [4]. The civilian settlement grew into an important way-station, possibly a municipium, before destruction by the Alamanni in 233 AD [1] [4]. Excavations revealed a rectangular chamber (15.5 x 9.5 m) with tripartite east termination that may represent an early Christian church [4] [5].
