Epfach

Epfach, known in antiquity as Abodiacum, was a Roman road station in Upper Bavaria at the strategic intersection of the Via Claudia Augusta and the salt road from Salzburg. A military camp was established on the Lorenzberg hill shortly after 15 BC to secure the Lech river crossing, consisting of palisaded timber structures. The civilian settlement grew into an important way-station, possibly a municipium, before destruction by the Alamanni in 233 AD. Under Diocletian the site was refortified, and excavations revealed a rectangular chamber (15.5 x 9.5 m) with tripartite east termination that may represent an early Christian church. The small Abodiacum museum now displays Roman-period finds from the site.
