Biriciana

Biriciana is a Roman ala castellum at modern Weissenburg in Middle Franconia, Bavaria, part of the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally built in timber c. 90 AD to secure territory conquered north of the Danube under Domitian, the nearly square fort (170 x 179 m) was rebuilt in stone in the mid-2nd century. In 1979 a gardener discovered the Weissenburg Treasure -- nearly 150 objects including 16 bronze deity statuettes, silver votive offerings, and parade armor, buried c. 233-250 AD during frontier unrest. The finds are now displayed in the Romermuseum alongside the fort's reconstructed north gate and large thermal baths.
