Welwyn Roman Baths

Remains of a 3rd-century AD Roman bathhouse preserved beneath the A1(M) motorway near Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. Part of the Dicket Mead villa complex, the baths were uncovered in 1960 by archaeologist Tony Rook and excavated over the following decade. When the motorway route was announced, a steel vault was built 9m below the road surface to protect the ruins. Visible features include a frigidarium with opus signinum bathing pool, tepidarium, caldarium, and hypocaust heating system.
