Ashwell, Hertfordshire

A village in Hertfordshire with deep archaeological significance. Southwest of the settlement lies Arbury Banks, the remains of an Iron Age hill fort largely levelled by ploughing. In 2002, metal detectorist Alan Meek discovered a silver-gilt figurine of the previously unknown Romano-British goddess Dea Senuna. Subsequent excavations over four summers uncovered 26 more gold and silver votive objects from a 3rd-4th century AD ritual site, along with over 150 Iron Age coins.
