Verulamium

Verulamium was the third-largest city in Roman Britain, located southwest of modern St Albans in Hertfordshire. Granted the rare status of municipium around 50 AD, the town was sacked by Boudica during the Iceni revolt in 61 AD but quickly rebuilt. By 140 AD it had doubled to 100 acres, featuring a forum dedicated to Emperor Vespasian in 79 AD, Britain's only still-visible Roman theatre built around 140 AD, and elaborate townhouses with mosaic floors and hypocaust heating. Defensive walls constructed around 270 AD enclosed a 3.4 km circuit. The town declined by the 5th century as nearby St Albans grew.
