Newgate

Newgate was a Roman gate in the London Wall. One of the seven gates protecting the City of London, it stood on the western side of the wall and controlled the road crossing the River Fleet toward Middlesex and western England [1]. In the 12th century, sections of the gate complex were adapted for use as a prison, eventually evolving into Newgate Prison [1].
