Braughing - Roman Town

Braughing was a small Roman town in Hertfordshire, situated at the navigable extremity of the River Rib and at the junction of Ermine Street and Stane Street. Iron Age settlement began around the 3rd century BC; coins of Tasciovanus (c. 20 BC - AD 10) link the site to the Catuvellauni tribe. After the Roman conquest, the town developed two population centres at Wickham Hill and Skeleton Green, covering at least 36 hectares but never defensively enclosed. Archaeological investigations have revealed ditches, enclosures, rectilinear timber buildings, and cremation burials from both Iron Age and Roman periods.
