Hexton

Ravensburgh Castle at Hexton is the largest Iron Age hillfort in the Chilterns, covering 22 acres including its defences. The site saw three construction phases from the Early Iron Age (c. 850-400 BC) through the Late Iron Age (c. 100 BC-AD 43), with the earliest fortifications of chalk rubble packed between timber palisades. It is one of very few Hertfordshire sites with pottery spanning the Middle Iron Age. Geophysical surveys in 2015 revealed traces of roundhouses and a small enclosure near the southeastern entrance.
