Waulud's Bank

A large D-shaped Neolithic henge enclosure at Leagrave, Luton, dating to approximately 3000 BC. The earthwork encloses around 7 hectares with a bank reaching 2.5m high and a ditch 9.2m wide and 2.1m deep. The River Lea rises within the enclosure, and the D-shape mirrors that of Marden Henge in Wiltshire, with both sites yielding grooved ware pottery. Excavations in 1953, 1971, and 1982 recovered Neolithic pottery, animal bones, and flint arrowheads, with evidence of earlier Mesolithic activity.
