Papcastle

Papcastle was the site of Derventio, a Roman fort established c. AD 80 in what is now Cumbria, England. Initially built in timber, it was reconstructed in stone during the Hadrianic period with involvement of the Sixth Legion Victrix. By AD 241, the Cuneus Frisiavonum, a Germanic auxiliary unit, garrisoned the fort. Excavations from 2010-2015 revealed the settlement was far larger than previously thought, uncovering one of the most complete Roman water mills found in Britain, a substantial mansio, and a bathhouse. Much of the fort's stonework was reused for Cockermouth Castle in the 12th century.
