Papcastle

Papcastle was the site of Derventio, a Roman fort in what is now Cumbria, England [1]. Initially built in timber, it was reconstructed in stone [1]. Excavations from 2010-2015 revealed the settlement was far larger than previously thought, uncovering one of the most complete Roman water mills found in Britain, a substantial mansio, and a bathhouse [1]. Much of the fort's stonework was reused for Cockermouth Castle in the 12th century [1] [2].
