Cadbury Castle, Somerset

Major Bronze and Iron Age hillfort in South Cadbury, Somerset, famously linked to King Arthur's Camelot since John Leland identified it as 'Camallate' in 1542. Excavations by Leslie Alcock (1966-1970) uncovered a substantial post-Roman 'Great Hall' measuring 20 by 10 metres and evidence that the innermost Iron Age ramparts were refortified in the 6th century AD with Roman dressed masonry and timber walkways. This refortification created a defended enclosure double the size of any other known fort of the period, spanning the classic Arthurian era.
