Blacker's Hill

An Iron Age promontory hillfort at Chilcompton, 4.5 km southwest of Radstock in Somerset. The fort encloses approximately 4.5 hectares on a natural spur, defended on the north and east by double banks up to 4 m high with intervening ditches 2-4 m wide, while the west and south sides relied on steep natural scarps. The inner bank and ditch on the northern side were damaged in the 19th century when adjacent fields were enlarged, and earthworks near Blacker's Hill Farm were reduced, likely for building material or to improve views. Despite this damage, it survives as a good example of a multivallate promontory fort and is designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
