King's Castle, Wells

King's Castle is an Iron Age enclosed hilltop settlement at the south-western edge of the Mendip Hills near Wells in Somerset, England [1]. Dating to between 1500-500 BC, it remains one of the earliest known settlements in the immediate vicinity of the modern city and may have been a precursor to Wells [1]. The site consists of two or three interlinked sub-enclosures with an apparent field system extending to the east—an unusual layout for the region [1]. Relatively little studied, it has never been archaeologically excavated and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument [1]. The site shares its name with surrounding King's Castle Wood, now a Somerset Wildlife Trust nature reserve, though this name is probably a modern invention [1].
