Sturminster Newton Castle

Sturminster Newton Castle is an Iron Age promontory fort reused as a medieval manorial site, located on a triangular limestone spur above the River Stour in Dorset, England. The crescent-shaped defences feature a bank 40 feet wide and 6-10 feet high with a ditch 50-60 feet wide and up to 20 feet deep, enclosing approximately 4 acres. Within the prehistoric earthworks stands a 14th-century manor house built for Glastonbury Abbey, surviving as a two-storey roofless ruin of rubble and ashlar. The site is privately owned and not accessible to visitors.
