Aptera, Greece

Aptera was one of the most important city-states of ancient Crete, located near Souda Bay in western Crete. First mentioned as A-pa-ta-wa in Linear B tablets from the 14th-13th centuries BC, it flourished from Minoan through Hellenistic times. The site preserves a temple of Apollo and Artemis, a theater, Roman cisterns, and 3.5 km of city walls. Destroyed by a major earthquake in 365 AD.
