Kamares, Crete

Kamares is a village in south-central Crete, Greece, home to Kamares Cave, a Minoan sacred cave in the Psiloriti Range. The cave sits slightly offset from a mountain saddle, virtually aligned with the palace center of Phaistos. Excavations yielded some of the finest Middle Minoan pottery, including the distinctive light-on-dark polychrome Kamares ware (MM IA/First Palace Period), with forms such as jugs and cups. This ceramic tradition took its type-site name from Kamares [1].
