Kommos, Crete

Kommos is a Minoan harbour town in southern Crete, active c. 3100–1100 BC, serving as a port for the palace centres of Phaistos and Hagia Triada. After the Bronze Age, a sanctuary was constructed over the earlier settlement ruins. The partially excavated site yielded significant evidence of international trade and Bronze Age daily life. It lies 5 km north of Matala, adjacent to Kommos Beach, and is not open to the public but remains visible from the shore.
