Armeni - Archaeological Site

A remarkably preserved Late Minoan cemetery near Rethymno, Crete, containing 232 rock-cut chamber tombs dating to c. 1420-1190 BC. Discovered by chance in 1965 and excavated since 1969, roughly 85% of tombs remained unlooted with stone slab seals intact. Finds include painted larnakes decorated with octopuses and hunting scenes, bronze weapons, sealstones, a boar's tusk helmet, and a stirrup jar inscribed in Linear B. All tomb entrances face east, possibly symbolizing solar cycles of life and death.
