Berry Castle, Black Dog

Berry Castle is an enigmatic earthwork near Black Dog in Devon, north of Crediton, probably dating to the Iron Age. Unlike typical hillforts, it does not occupy a hilltop but sits on the south-east slope of a major hill peaking at 199 m above sea level, and its earthwork appears to form an incomplete enclosure rather than a full defensive circuit. It was recorded in J. Charles Wall's 'Ancient Earthworks' in the 1906 Victoria County History of Devon. The site remains poorly understood and has seen limited archaeological investigation.
