Ide, Devon

A village in Devon, England, 1.6 km southwest of Exeter, notable for a Roman signal station on the hilltop above the settlement. The signal station features an outer rectangular ditched enclosure with rounded corners up to 100 m long, surrounding an inner square ditched enclosure of approximately 35 m internally. As one of a small group of Roman military signal stations in Britain, the site is nationally important for understanding army strategy and military control during the Roman occupation. The village church is dedicated to Saint Ida of Herzfeld.
