Cotley Castle

Cotley Castle is a large Iron Age univallate hillfort near Dunchideock in Devon, southwest of Exeter, occupying a triangular hilltop at 220 m above sea level on the Haldon Hills ridge. Dating to around 500 BC, the site consists of an oval enclosure measuring approximately 90 x 70 m internally, defined by a single rampart bank 1.5 m high. The fort may have served as part of a beacon warning system and was referred to as 'Eordbirig' in a charter of 1044. The site lies within the territory of the Dumnonii, the Celtic tribe that inhabited Devon during the Iron Age.
