EnglandA 1st-century Roman column standing in Minster Yard, York, originally part of the headquarters basilica of Eboracum. Built around AD 100 by Legio IX Hispana and later reused by Legion VI, it was one of sixteen columns supporting the basilica roof. The gritstone column stands approximately 9.5 metres high in Tuscan architectural order. Discovered beneath York Minster during 1969 excavations, it was re-erected in 1971 to mark the 1900th anniversary of York's founding. It was likely inside this basilica that Constantine was proclaimed Emperor in AD 306.
