Eboracum was a Roman legionary fortress established in AD 71 by the Ninth Legion Hispana on the banks of the River Ouse. The rectangular fortress covered 50 acres and was rebuilt in stone from the early 2nd century using Magnesian Limestone from Tadcaster. It grew into the largest town in northern Britain and served as a provincial capital. Two emperors died here: Septimius Severus in 211 AD and Constantius Chlorus in 306 AD, after which Constantine was proclaimed emperor by the garrison. Substantial remains survive, including the 4th-century Multangular Tower in York's Museum Gardens.
