Lagentium

Lagentium was a Roman auxiliary fort and civilian settlement underlying the modern town of Castleford in West Yorkshire, England, built on the south bank of the River Aire near its confluence with the River Calder. Constructed around AD 71 during the Roman conquest of the Brigantes, it sat on the major road between Lindum (Lincoln) and Eburacum (York). The site was an important manufacturing center specializing in enameled metalwork, including spoons, brooches, and water canteens -- the only known spoon-making center in the Western Roman Empire. A glass-making industry also operated there, and the fort served as a station where imperial messengers rested and changed horses.
