Devil's Arrows

The Devil's Arrows are three surviving Early Bronze Age standing stones (c. 2000 BC) aligned north-to-south over 374 metres near Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire. Fashioned from Millstone Grit quarried approximately 7 miles away at Knaresborough, they stand between 5.4 and 6.8 metres high, each weighing 20-30 tonnes. Their surfaces bear distinctive vertical grooves caused by millennia of rainfall erosion. Originally four or more stones, one was removed in the 18th century during a treasure hunt and reused for a bridge. A scheduled monument since 1923, the alignment may have served astronomical or ceremonial purposes.
